Library Hours: Winter Break

In observance of the Ashland University campus holiday schedule, AU Library will close at 5:00 pm on Thursday, December 18, 2014 and remain closed through Thursday, January 1, 2015.

AU Library will be open 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Friday, January 2nd. For additional holiday hours information, please visit the library hours and update page on the library web site.

AU Library: Study Rooms

Looking for a quiet space to study during finals?

AU Library has designated the 4th and 5th floors as quiet spaces during extended hours and finals week, November 30th - December 10th. Comfortable open study areas are available to students on both floors.

Interested in reserving a study room?  

Stop at the circulation desk and reserve one of our study rooms on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors for a maximum of three hours. Please note, students using a reserved study room will be asked to vacate the room.

Library Patio Entrance

Facilities Management has closed access to the library patio for the season; the surface may become slippery during the inclement winter weather. Stairs leading to the patio and the library entrance will be closed through spring.

Please enter and exit the Library using the main entrance, south side of the building, near Founders and the Auriculum (sculpture).

AU Library Congratulates Kathryn Venditti

Reference and Instruction librarian Kathryn Venditti was honored at the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) 40th Annual Conference on Friday, November 14th, with the Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award.

"This award recognizes an individual who (1) has been an ALAO member for at least 5 years, and (2) who has promoted academic libraries and librarianship not only on his or her own campus, but also within the state. The award also recognizes someone who has provided leadership in the promotion of ALAO through service such as committee membership, executive board office, or interest group office." -- Jay Ladd Award

Kathryn is an active member of ALAO; her service has included being chair of the Distance Learning Interest Group, chair of the Instruction Interest Group, member of the Conference Program Committee, and Interest Group Coordinator.  Join AU Library in congratulating Kathryn for receiving this distinguished award.

OhioLINK: AU Columbus Center

OhioLINK courier service to the Columbus Center will be discontinued at the end of this semester. Beginning today, Monday, November 10th, the option to select AU Columbus Center as a pick-up location will not be available. Please note that materials already in transit will be delivered to the Columbus Center.

All students may use the OhioLINK pick-up anywhere option and have requested materials delivered to any participating OhioLINK library (member institution).  After selecting an item to request, choose a pick up institution location from the drop down menu on the request verification page.

When picking up items at an OhioLINK library, be sure to (required) :

• present your Ashland University ID - OR -
• know your AU ID # and have a form of identification

If you need help with pick-up anywhere, visit the AU library reference desk or contact a reference librarian at ext 5402 or 419-289-5402.

Phishing Alert

Some faculty have reported receiving a message from "libservice" at ashland.edu that speaks of a need to recover library accounts.  There is nothing legitimate about the message.  Please delete it and do not click any of the links within it.

The OhioLINK website will be down for maintenance Thursday morning, October 16th, from 6 a.m. to about 8 a.m.  Other OhioLINK services, such as the OhioLINK Catalog and the Electronic Journal Center, are expected to remain available.

LibGuides: A to Z Database List

Next in our series of LibGuides informational posts is the A to Z Database List. Conveniently located with our collection of course guides, library instruction guides, and research guides, the LibGuides A to Z Database List is a helpful resource for locating and identifying journal, e-book, open source, and internet portals for research.

	The A to Z Database list is located directly below the Library Hours, Updates, and News box on the LibGuides home page. Select the purple Go to A-Z List button for access.
	The main A-Z Database list page provides several options for locating AU Library & OhioLINK database resources. Use the search box, select an entry from the alphabetical listing, or use one of the drop down menus to find a database by subject, type, or even vendor.
	The A to Z Database list is conveniently presented on a single page. Each entry includes an icon, or icons, next to the title indicating what type of resources is available. For database details, click 'more' to expand the entry and read additional information.

LibGuides A to Z Database list is an additional resource;  the AU Library web site provides a comprehensive, searchable Library Database Directory. If you need help accessing a database from off campus,  visit on the library web site Connecting from Off Campus page.  If you would to schedule a reference appointment for help with your research and/or using our databases, feel free to use the online form or call the reference desk at x5402.

Banned Books Week: September 21 - 27, 2014

It's time to celebrate Banned Books Week; this year's theme is "Celebrating the Freedom to Read." What is Banned Books Week?

LibGuides: E-Reserves

First in our series of LibGuides information posts is Electronic Reserves, or E-Reserves. Faculty may place items on E-reserve for course use; items are secure, access is password protected, and each course has a unique password which is provided to the
instructor for student use both on and off campus.

The following information will help you get started.

Already have a course or instruction LibGuide? 
E-reserves may be added as a dedicated tab for quick and easy access.

E-Reserves are accessible through AU Library web site and LibGuides portal. From the library web site, select the research guides link directly below OneSearch.

	An E-Reserves search box is located directly below the A-Z Database List. Use the search box to find a course by number or instructor name, or simply select “go” to access the E-Reserves home page.
	The main E-Reserves page lists each course alphabetically by number / name. Navigate using the tabs for course, instructor, or term, or enter information in the search box.
	Course E-Reserves have a customized page which includes course number, name, instructor, and term. Take time to read the copyright statement, enter the e-reserves password, and click ‘go’ for E-Reserves access.

About Electronic Reserves

A variety of file formats are accepted including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDF, and image (.jpeg or .gif, great for infographics). AU Library and OhioLINK database links and general Internet resources may also be included in course e-reserve selections.

To submit an item for electronic reserve, complete the submission form and return it with a clean, readable copy of the reserve item to the circulation desk. Images may be submitted via email attachment on an as needed basis. Please allow seven to ten days, Monday through Friday, for access to new reserve items.

LibGuides: Overview

LibGuides? What is LibGuides?

"LibGuides is an easy to use Content Management System used by many thousands of libraries worldwide. Librarians use it to curate knowledge and share information by creating online Guides on any topic, subject, course, on any process, on any thing." - Springshare

Ashland University Library was one of the 'early adopters' of LibGuides. We have been creating and sharing library information and resources using the LibGuides platform for five years. What does LibGuides have to offer? Here's an overview of a few things we can do - and are currently doing -with AU Library's LibGuides.


In addition to the refreshed content layout, our recent migration to LibGuide v2 includes a refreshed E-Reserves platform and easy to use A to Z Database list.  Learn more about how LibGuides can provide library support for your class by contacting your library liaison. OhioLINK Catalog Maintenance

The OhioLINK Library Catalog will be down early Thursday morning, August 21st, as it undergoes several upgrades.  OhioLINK expects it to be down from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., so most of us won't notice.  Early risers may as well sleep in.

What's new? LibGuides

We are excited to announce an update to Ashland University Library's LibGuide information portal and Electronic Reserves. LibGuides - or Library Guides - feature the same great library research help, course support, and information; same easy access to electronic reserves; all with an updated design and increased functionality for users.

Accessing Library guides is easy; from the AU Library home page select the Research Guide link directly below OneSearch or the Library Help quick links. Electronic Reserves, or E-Res, are accessible from the library home page via the Reserves link on the left side bar. It is also possible to find E-Reserves directly from the LibGuides home page. We will be sharing more about our LibGuides update and resources available in the coming weeks.

Special thanks to Chad Draper and Joe Ellis in Web Services for their exceptional work customizing LibGuides, it functions seamlessly with the AU Library site.  We also would like to thank Kris Kennedy in marketing for his work on a new AU Library banner and Mark Usher in Information Technology for key updates to the site URL making it possible to 'go live' with LibGuides v2.

ProQuest databases will be unavailable because of maintenance from 10:00 p.m. Saturday, June 14th, through 6:00 a.m. Sunday, June 15h.  Affected databases include ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, American Periodicals, Safari Books Online, and the Wall Street Journal.

Looking for a quiet space to study during finals?

AU Library has designated the 4th and 5th floors as quiet spaces during extended hours and finals week, April 27th through May 6th.

Study rooms and open study areas are available to students on both floors. If a computer is not available in the study room, outlets are present for personal computers.

• Interested in reserving a study room?
  The circulation desk, library main floor, has sign up sheets. Reserve a study room on the third, fourth, and fifth floor for three hours.


• Having trouble with your computer?
  Check out a laptop at the circulation desk, library main floor.

Therapy Dogs in the Library this Week!

Starting Sunday, April 27, 3-5,  therapy dogs visit the AU Library! The Library & Center for Academic Support hope to make Finals stress-free for you. Come cuddle with the visiting therapy pups, take a quick yoga break, snag

a cookie, and chill out with some coloring books & Legos. We're open until 2am on school nights.

OhioLINK Service Interruptions Wednesday

On Wednesday evening, February 5th, OhioLINK expects two brief service interruptions as it performs maintenance on its system.  Services affected will include the OhioLINK website, OhioLINK Catalog and request system, databases, and other web services.  The interruptions are expected to last no more than a minute each.

AU Library: Coffee & Tea Bar

AU Library now has a Keurig!

The Keurig brewing machine and coffee & tea bar are located next to the circulation desk on the library main floor. K-cups are available for $1.25; price includes beverage, cup and lid, plus sweetener and creamers.

Ashland University Library will close at 5:00 pm today.

Library Catalog Problem Corrected

Off-campus access to the library catalog has been restored, along with everything that depends on it, including the ability to place OhioLINK requests and get off-campus access to OhioLINK's Electronic Journal Center.  If you have any difficulty getting access to any library resources, close your browser and ty again, and if problems continue contact us at library@ashland.edu or text us at 419-768-6106.

Ashland University Library will be closed Monday, January 6th.

As reported on the University web site and campus alerts, classes are cancelled and offices closed on Monday (1/6).

"University & Seminary Closed Monday; Classes Canceled for Monday & Tuesday - All AU campuses closed Monday due to weather conditions and all AU classes are canceled for Monday & Tuesday of this week. Essential staff only will report to work on Monday."
