Ask the IRC: Chat

Chat has returned to the Instructional Resource Center. Questions? Ask the IRC chat is staffed by the curriculum librarian and IRC student workers.

Chat hours for Spring 2016
Monday - Thursday: 10 am to 10 pm
Sunday: 2 pm to 6 pm


Why chat? Sometimes you have IRC questions while working online in your dorm, somewhere on campus, or even off campus. Chat provides opportunity to connect with the IRC quickly and easily while remaining at your current location.

What Questions? Ask the IRC can help with basic questions, such as general information about the IRC, collections, juvenile books, equipment, and hours.

Where can I chat?  Ask the IRC chat widgets are available on the IRC main page, as well as on the IRC Services and Pricing and IRC Chat policy pages.  You will also find chat widgets on the IRC FAQs page and several IRC Course LibGuides. How does it work? Easy as 1, 2, 3. 1. Visit one of the pages with a chat widget, click to open chat box, or - 2. Wait. The chat widget will open in 30 seconds. Choose to chat now or click no thanks to close the box. 3. Enter your name, type in a question, and start chat.

But wait ... there's more! Chat will also work on your mobile device

Take time to visit the IRC Chat policy page. It details information about question types, acceptable use of the chat service, and availability of chat transcripts sent via email.

IRC is open today

The IRC is officially open as of 11:00 am this morning (11/5)!

• Yes, the roll top laminator is once again in working order.
• Yes, it is possible to color print from the second floor.
• Yes, all IRC collections are once again available.

Collections have been shelved, equipment checked, and resources returned to their home location.  Some areas are still a bit damp, you will notice a musty odor from the water, but a dehumidifier is in place to combat these elements. For additional information, read the IRC News Blog.

IRC Open Monday

The Instructional Resource Center will be closed the remainder of this week.  We anticipate reopening on Monday (11/5) afternoon once collections are shelved and furniture/resources restored to their correct locations.

Again, here are a few ideas if you need help with resources and supplies:

• Supplies: Visit the AU Bookstore for paper supplies such as poster board and construction paper.
• Color Printing: 200 Patterson has a print quota color printer.
• Color Printing: IT help desk is able to help if you need support with the 200 Lab color printer.
• Laminating:  AU Printing services has laminating options of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet lamination for $1 per page and a wide and wide laminator for $5/foot.
• Laminating: Irwin's Office supply in downtown Ashland has laminating services ($2.50/foot).  Call ahead for their hours 419-289-3400.

IRC Update: Closed

The Instructional Resource Center remains closed today (10/31) due to flooding, saturated carpets, and lack of power;  laminating, color printing ,the Ellison machine, and IRC resources are unavailable at this time.

• Supplies: If you need supplies (poster board, construction paper), try the AU Bookstore.
• Color Printing: If you need to color print, there is a print-quota color printer in 200 Patterson.
• Color Printing: If the printer in 200 is out of order, tech support recommends you go to the help desk, they can print color for you.
• Laminating is available at the AU Print shop, they have a small laminator ($1/foot) and wide laminator ($5/foot).
• Laminating: Irwin's Office supply in downtown Ashland has laminating services ($2.50/foot).  You can call for hours 419-289-3400.

IRC News: Big Books

Have you ever searched for a big book in the library juvenile collection? Located on the second floor, big books were crowded into two rolling carts.


Not anymore! Each big book has been placed in large hanging media bag and the entire big book collection relocated next to the book kits. Hanging bags will make it easier to transport big books to and from the library and provide protection for the book during inclement weather.


Looking for a specific big book? Call numbers are located at the top left / bottom left side next to the spine of each book. The collection now has added functionality and browse-ability. Stop in and see the new big book area the next time you are in the library.

IRC Update: Library 2nd floor

Library and IRC patrons will notice an immediate change in the second floor temperature this week. Sunday evening the air conditing unit filled the second floor with smoke and the unit is currently out of order.

We are thrilled to report no damage was sustained by any of the second floor's education, curriculum, or juvenile collections. However, as we await repairs to the unit, it will be very warm on the second floor.
