Bloomsday: Celebrating Ulysses by James Joyce

Banner image says Bloomsday 2022 Celebrate Ulysses by James Joyce with a small image of the author

June 16th is Bloomsday! What is Bloomsday?

It is a celebration of the novel Ulysses by James Joyce which all takes place on Thursday, June 16th 1904 in Dublin, Ireland and is named for the central character, Leopold Bloom.

The first celebration of Bloomsday in Ireland was 1954 for the 50th anniversary, and continues to this day with special visits to the places mentioned in the novel. But people around the world celebrate Bloomsday too, with people dressing up as characters from the book, hosting readings, re-enactments, and performances, as well as creating food and drink from the book.

Celebrators (1999), image from Wikipedia

Importance of Ulysses

The book itself was published February 2, 1922 by Sylvia Beach through her bookstore Shakespeare and Company in Paris. In the 100 years since its publication, Ulysses has been celebrated and censored, banned and cherished. Banned on obscenity charges while still in draft chapters and again in a 1928 US Customs trial, the book afterwards was seized at US customs and burned because it “might cause American readers to harbor "impure and lustful thoughts".” This ban was challenged in court and lifted in 1934; the free speech arguments in defense of Ulysses in that landmark case have shaped the subsequent debates about literature’s rights to freedom of expression to this day.

The Archer Library is lucky to have a copy from this first seized 1922 run of Ulysses in our Special Collections seen here

1922 copy of Ulysses - Archer Library Special Collections

And while we can’t read from it for Bloomsday, we are excited to enjoy the celebration of the James Joyce’s work 100 years later. Let us know how you plan to celebrate Bloomsday, or your thoughts on this epic noel by James Joyce!

OhioLINK Notice • Requests Paused

OhioLINK Notice

The Ohio Department of Administrative Services (DAS), The State Library of Ohio, and OhioLINK have come to agreement that it is necessary to change providers for the print delivery system across the State of Ohio.

On March 11, 2022, requests for print materials from the OhioLINK Central Catalog and SearchOhio Catalog will be paused through the end of April 2022. This change will allow the statewide delivery locations to minimize the number of items that must be transferred between delivery service providers.

Archer Library will be working to help users with other options for print materials that are available to users including Interlibrary Loan, book chapters through Interlibrary Loan, and options for users to utilize local OhioLINK libraries as visiting patrons. It is important to note that a higher volume of requests with alternative options is expected and may result in delivery delays.

Additional information is available on OhioLINK's Print Lending FAQs Page

Cheers to 50 years Trivia

Title Card - Fun Facts for celebration of 50 years

The Library building is 50 years old this semester and we are excited to celebrate with AU students! We are running two rounds of trivia. That means two library related questions and two chances to win. If you are one of the 4 closest guesses to the answer you could win an Amazon Fire tablet or AU merch (for this round we have a water bottle, pillow, pennant and stickers)!

For this first round the question is:

How many people visit the Library in a year (specifically from Fall 2018 through Summer 2019)?
*this number was pulled using the gate counts*

Submit your best guess here: https://forms.gle/dNA1Kd8ys2n3VY2r5

Guesses close on March 21, 2022 for this round!

Details: Must be an AU student and only one guess per person. We will review and select the winners on March 22nd, winners will chose their prize (closest to the right answer chooses their prize first, and so on) and have 5 days to collect them - then we will move down the list.

If you have any questions, you can reach out to Jessica Byers (jbyers7@ashland.edu).
